CSL Plasma
CSL Plasma runs blood donation centers that provide life-saving therapies for various health conditions. They ensure a steady supply of plasma for treatments by collecting and processing donations, supporting patient care and advancing medical research and clinical trials.
Our goal was to create a plasma donation center management dashboard with a real-time simulation feature to improve the donation center’s operations, optimize staffing, and enhance the donor experience.

Challenges & Opportunities
Uncovering Key Operational Challenges
CSL Plasma’s center managers faced significant challenges with inefficient staff allocation and a lack of real-time data to monitor the center’s key performance metrics. With manual processes for tracking and distributing staff, there was room for significant optimization. The opportunity lay in creating a user-friendly dashboard that would enable center managers to view real-time data and run simulations to allocate resources more effectively.
Lack of Real-time Metrics
No single source provided live data on donation progress or efficiency metrics, hindering timely decision-making.
Staff allocation not optimized
Limited flexibility for simulations, making it hard to improve center flow based on staff allocation and time frames.
Research Insights
Uncovering Key Operational Challenges
To better understand the pain points, we conducted interviews with key stakeholders, including CSL’s center managers. The main goals were to identify inefficiencies and gather insights into their daily operational struggles. While we didn’t have access to donors or staff directly, the interviews revealed valuable insights.
The project kicked off with a discovery phase focused on understanding the key challenges faced by CSL Plasma center managers.
?
Stakeholder Interviews
We conducted interviews with CSL Plasma center managers to gather insights on their daily workflows and pain points.
Competitive Analysis
We examined similar tools in healthcare to identify best practices for operational dashboards & staffing solutions.
Staff shortage
Donor wait time
Not enough plasma collected
Phlebotomy bruising leads to bad customer experience
Key Insight 1
Manual processes for managing staff allocation during peak and off-peak hours were time-consuming and error-prone.
Key Insight 2
Center managers lacked an efficient way to visualize real-time performance data and staffing needs, making it difficult to respond to fluctuating donor volumes.
Key Insight 3
There was a strong need for predictive tools to help center managers simulate staffing scenarios and optimize resource allocation.
Visualizing the User Journey
A walk at the donor center
Visualizing the daily workflows of center staff and managers helped us understand their current processes and identify pain points. This insight allows us to design a solution that better meets their needs, resulting in a more effective and user-friendly experience.

Defining the Problem
Listening to the needs and frustrations
The primary problem was that CSL Plasma’s center managers lacked an efficient way to monitor, manage, and optimize staff allocation in real-time, leading to inefficiencies and delays. The objective of this project was to build a Simulation Management Dashboard that would allow managers to visualize key performance indicators (KPIs) and run simulations to improve staffing decisions.
?
Problem Statement
Center managers need a streamlined way to monitor operations and adjust staff allocation in real-time to ensure efficient plasma donation processes, reduce wait times, and maximize center productivity.
Objective 1
Design a real-time dashboard that shows key metrics like donor wait times, staff-to-donor ratios, and overall center performance clearly.
Objective 2
Develop a simulation tool that helps center managers predict staffing needs based on historical and real-time data.
Objective 3
Create an intuitive staff allocation tool for quick and accurate resource adjustments to increase operation efficiency and optimize.
Ideation & Wireframing
A walk at the donor center
Based on the insights gathered, I explored several ideas to address the main pain points. I focused on simplifying the data presented to managers, so they could make quick and informed decisions. I created early wireframes that focused on two key tools: KPI Dashboard and Simulation Tool.
These insights shaped the core features of the dashboard: KPI prioritization, a staffing simulation tool, and a clear visualization of donor flow.
